One good example of subjectivity in a film would be in the movie A Christmas Story. This film was released on November 18, 1983. Throughout the film we can hear the main character, Ralphie, narrating the story as an older man, like he is looking back and recalling these memories, almost telling them in a story. I think the director took this approach to the film so that we can know what Ralphie is thinking the whole movie.

A movie that is a good example of objectivity is Chronicle. Chronicle was released on February 3, 2012. The film doesn’t let us in on what the main characters are thinking, we just see what they see and hear. The whole film is filmed in a way that it looks like it is coming from a video camera. If the director had included a narrator or let the audience hear the main character’s thoughts then the audience would be lost because a video tape shouldn’t allow us to hear character’s thoughts.

The Mist is a movie that doesn’t follow the Classic Hollywood style of filmmaking. At the end of the movie you don’t really ever know what happens to the protagonist.

The Cabin in the Woods is a horror story about five college students who go to stay in a cabin lent to them by one of the students cousins. After the first night in the cabin the students realize that there is something weird going on. A family of sadistic zombies has risen and they are killing the friends off one by one. Just when all hope is lost they realize that there is more to the zombie attacks than meets the eye. The three main characters are Curt, played by Chris Hemsworth, Dane, played by Kristen Connolly, and Marty, played by Fran Kranz.

I watched this in the movie theatre when it first came out and I’ve watched it a couple of times after that.

I chose this film because I love to watch horror films and this was a new one out that looked really interesting.

The thing I liked most about this film was that it was really original. This is probably the most original film I have ever seen. You never see the plot twist coming even though you are keyed in on it throughout the whole film.

The ending of this film just ends in despair and you aren’t really sure if you’re happy about it or not.

I would completely recommend this film. It is really good. 

Principles of Film

Function- In Big Fish the ring leader of the circus, played by Danny Devito, serves the function of telling the main character all about the girl he loves. Without Devito the main character would never have found the love of his life.

Similarity and Repetition- In the Pirates of the Caribbean films Captain Jack Sparrow’s drunkenness and lax attitude are motifs that appear in every movie. 

Difference and Variation- In The Lord of the Rings Trilogy most of Middle Earth is full of vibrant colors, except for Mordor which is dark and scary. This provides a nice contrast of setting.

Unity and Disunity- In the film The Grey you never find out if Liam Neeson’s character actually beats the last wolf at the end. He could have beat the wolf and lived or he could have been devoured by it.

(500) Days of Summer was directed by Marc Webb. 

(500) Days of Summer is kind of a “love” story. It is about a guy named Tom who works for a greeting card company and falls in love with the new girl in his office, named Summer, when he first sees her. After finding out that they have a lot in common he finally gets up the nerve to talk to her. He becomes dismayed when he finds out that she doesn’t believe in love. They never technically date each other but Tom considers them “together.” After about 300 days of knowing each other Summer tells Tom she just wants to be friends. The next 200 days are about Tom coping with this fact. Tom is played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Summer is played by Zooey Deschanel.

I watched this movie in my room last night on my laptop.

I chose this movie because I had heard a lot of good things about it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is my favorite actor, so that helped out a lot too.

The film has a great story line. It’s very original for a romantic comedy. The soundtrack is awesome too, it has some of my favorite songs on it. 

The one thing I didn’t like about the film is that it didn’t end how I wanted it too. It still had a good ending but it wasn’t what I was expecting.

I would most definitely recommend this film to anyone and everyone. Its one of my favorite movies of all time.
